Welcome to 1W

Your class teachers are Miss Wilkin and Mrs Elderton

Reading

We love to read in 1W. We encourage the children to read every night at home. When they have finished their book, we recommend that you ask them questions about the book. We will change books three times a week, on a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday. In Key Stage 1 we have a 100 book challenge. Each time your child reads at home, sign their reading record and we will fill in a square on the challenge sheet. Your child will receive prizes the more they read.
We are very happy to speak to you if you have any concerns about your child’s learning.

Autumn 1

Our theme this term is …….. Lost in the Toy Museum!

Our theme this term is a History theme and to begin with we will be looking at how we have changed since we were babies.  We will then be looking at the History of Toys.  We will be finding out about how toys have changed over the years and the children will have the opportunity to play with some old toys!  They will also be able to make some old toys and we will be having a Teddy Bear’s Picnic!  The children will be making some old-fashioned food to have at the picnic!  It will be very exciting!

Autumn 2

This term our topic is …..

Animal Magic!

We will be looking at what an animal actually is; something that eats, breathes, moves and drinks.  We will be looking out ourselves, as we too are animals and we will be labelling parts of our bodies and finding out the names of internal and external body names.  We shall be looking at our 5 senses and which parts of our bodies are responsible for each of our senses.  We will also be sorting animals into different criteria, i.e. if they have 2 legs, or can fly or have wings.

It is going to be a really exciting topic and by the end, we will be able to tell everyone what an omnivore, a carnivore and a herbivore is!

Jungle Animals - Puzzle Factory

We can’t wait to get started so make sure you ask us lots of questions about animals and remember that humans are animals too!

Spring 1

This term, our topic is called ‘Once Upon a Time…’.  We are looking at lots of different fairy tales and traditional stories.  We will be reading The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Billy Goats Gruff, Cinderella and Goldilocks.  We will be looking at materials as part of our Science learning objectives; looking at their physical properties, finding out why objects are made from those materials and matching materials to their properties.  We will also be using our DT skills to create slippers for Cinderella so that she can go to the ball!
