6S Class Page

Welcome to the wonderful world of 6S!

Mrs Sanders, Mr Marriott and Mrs Helme are here to help parents and children.  If you have any questions about Year 6, please come and speak to us.

We have PE on Monday and Friday afternoons.

Weekly homework will be uploaded onto Google Classroom.  This will be weekly spellings and some additional maths or English each week.  The children aim to be ‘every night a reader’ and reading books will be checked each morning in class.

Links to Spelling Shed, Times Table Rockstars and Rapid Readers are on the class pages of Google Classroom.

Autumn 1 – Ancient Greeks

IN Autumn 1, we learnt about Ancient Greece.

After researching what life was like in Greece in the past, the children used some ingredients commonly found in Greece to make their own tzatziki and salad. They evaluated the food afterwards and we found that we loved the new flavours!

Autumn 2 – World War 2

This term we are learning about the events of WWII and its impact on the lives of people in Britain. We have a couple of trips planned around this topic so please look out for information on these. The children are very interested to learn about WWII and have made a great start to the topic with insightful questions and mature discussions.

The Big Draw!

On Friday 4th November the children spent the day developing their drawing skills, and in particular, their use of perspective and horizon.

Spring 1 – Power

This half term we learnt all about different types of power. In science, we built on learning from Year 4 to develop our understanding of electricity and circuits. We then used this and our work on algorithms in computing to design and create our own remote controlled cars! The term kicked off with a really exciting visit to Heysham Power Station, where the staff were blown away by our knowledge and our wonderful behaviour.

We also held a SATs information evening for parents with details of what to expect in the coming months and how to be relaxed and ready. This information can be accessed by clicking the link. SATs parent meeting 2023

Spring 2 – Survival

This term, the children learnt about how animals and plants adapt and evolve to survive in different regions across the planet.  With a focus on science and geography, they learnt how species survive in the harshest of environments.

In English, we also looked at how humans have survived significant events and how some of those ended in tragedy.  We wrote our own versions of the diary of Robert Falcon Scott on his race to the South Pole, wrote newspaper reports about the tragic events of the Titanic’s maiden voyage, used our facts learnt in science to write a non-chronological report about the Arctic and used expressive vocabulary to write poetry on the Northern Lights.

We were lucky enough to have visit from Mike Kosch from Lancaster University.  Mike is a professor in experimental space science and his job takes him all over the world.  He managed to fit in a visit to us between trips to African deserts! Mike told us all about his journey to the South Pole and explained how he adapted to survive in those harsh conditions.  His photos were incredible and the children were fascinated by his stories.

Summer 1 – SATs

The children in Year 6 will be sitting their SATs in the week beginning Tuesday 9th May.  The children have all worked incredibly hard this year and we know they will be absolutely brilliant! We will be running breakfast club, free of charge, for all Year 6 children in this week.  Information will be sent to parents separately.

Homework to support revision is added to Google Classroom and explained to children in school.  Please encourage your child to try out these activities at home to help consolidate their learning.  The children are able to take their school Chromebooks home to enable them to do this if you do not have access to devices at home.

If you have any questions about SATs, please come and speak to Mrs Sanders or Mrs Reddy.
