WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF RECEPTION
Within Reception we aim to give your child the opportunity to learn through play. To facilitate this, we have a well-resourced classroom and an inviting outdoor space where we aim to make your child’s first year in school a fun and exciting experience!

Daily Readers
Once your child has settled into reception they will bring home a reading book and reading record which will need to be brought back into school every day. At Ryelands’ the expectation is your child will share their reading book each night at home. During the Autumn term, your child will come home with sounds to practise and simple words which use these sounds (reading games). This will be a significant step in learning to read. Any time you can spend with your child talking about their sounds, words or reading book will assist with the development of your child’s reading ability.
P.E.
PE will commence after Christmas.

Autumn 1
During Autumn 1 half term reception have been focused on building bonds and embedding routines and expectations. In addition, we looked at how we are the same and what is different. We have used texts to support their learning (Same but Different, Our Skin and Only One You) and enhanced each area of learning to embed this. The children have been introduced to Phonics and early number concepts and some are already beginning to read and write simple words, compare small amounts and subitise up to 6! An excellent start to our Reception year.

Autumn 2
During Autumn 2 we have had lots of fun learning about different festivals and celebrations. The children have now moved onto Phase 3 in Red Rose and have been busy applying their phonic knowledge in their reading and writing. In maths, we have been comparing amounts using the vocabulary of , ‘more’, ‘fewer’ and ‘equal’ . We have also explored ‘whole’ and ‘part’, both as part/whole of an object and within a number i.e. 3 – 2 is a part and 1 is a part and the whole of me is 3! We have enjoyed sharing a variety of texts both fiction and non fiction, which have helped to enhance their learning.

Spring 1
We have had super half term in Reception. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the changes in the seasons and discovering what winter brings. They were also very excited to explore our “Out of This World” topic, which sparked lots of curiosity, creativity and fantastic discussions around space and dinosaurs.
We have learnt so many new phonemes in Phonics and our comparison and in Maths we have developed our composition and comparison skills.

Spring 2
