A very warm welcome to Year 5!
Meet the team:
5 Pine – Mrs Hughes, Mrs Procter and Miss Woodrow
5 Rowan – Mrs Boothman, Mrs Grogan and Mrs Helme
PPA Teacher – Mr Sorell
PE
5 Pine is on Wednesday.
5 Rowan is on Monday.
PE Kit is pumps with shorts and house coloured t-shirt for indoor PE. We will be doing some PE outside so it would be a good idea to have leggings/tracksuit bottoms to wear outside. Trainers will also be acceptable for outdoor PE.
Swimming
Year 5 go swimming in the Autumn and Spring terms. This takes place on a Thursday morning. Swimming kit is a cap (if long hair), a towel and a swimming costume (girls) or swimming trunks (boys)
Daily Reader Expectation
In Year 5, there is an expectation that all children read every night.
We would like children to bring their Reading Records to school with the date, the pages which they read, and any comments on what they read. The Reading Records should be returned to school each morning, where they are checked each morning. We will be having a reading reward for those children who have made the effort to read every night.
Weekly homework
We do not currently give homework in year 5 but it would be beneficial if your child could access the following websites/apps to help their learning.
- Times Table Rockstars
- Numbots
- Rapid Readers
- Spelling Shed
Please note: If you require help accessing these sites from home, feel free to pop in for help.

Autumn 1
Year 5 got stuck into their science topic: properties and changes of materials. We’ve tested different materials and conducted experiments to learn about reversible and irreversible changes.
In English, we are studying the book ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’.
-
Autumn 2
Year 5 will enjoy learning all about the ancient Egyptians this half term. We will write instructions on the mummification process, experiment with hieroglyphic paintings, write a recount of discovering an ancient Egyptian tomb in the Valley of the Kings and will explore ancient civilisations in History!
What a fantastic topic to study!

Spring 1
Our topic for Spring 1 is Space: what is out there?
This is a huge topic where our Year 5 pupils will; become familiar with the planets (specialising in one in particular), will express their imagination in Peter Thorpe-inspired art and will delve into science topics (such as forces and the movements of the planets).
-
Spring 2
Our Spring 2 topic is a Geography one: Earth, Our Planet.
Our year 5 pupils will explore the great outdoors at Coniston on their first school residential!
We will refine our map-reading skills and will study important environmental issues.
-
Summer 1
Our topic this half term is another brilliant science one: the life cycles of plants, animals and humans.
In English we are studying the text ‘The Hobbit’ which is a brilliant fantasy story.
-
Summer 2
During the final half term of the year, Year 5 will be learning all about Lancaster’s historic involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We will be visiting key places locally which will tell us more about this often overlooked, but important, History.
In English, we will be studying two important and historical texts: The Highwayman and Macbeth. Both were written hundreds of years ago and yet have stood the test of time.
We will also be exploring digital art and cooking in D&T.
It’s a jam-packed half term as always, let’s learn and have lots of fun!
Homework this half term is a local history trail which can be completed as a family during a weekend.
