Using tens frames

The children have loved exploring the tens frames. We learnt the name for the piece of mathematical equipment- tens frame and talked about why it was called a tens frame- because it has 10 spaces for 10 pieces to go in. The children explored different options to fill the tens frame with either the red or blue sides up. We then counted how many red pieces and how many blue pieces and how many in total. We then challenged ourselves to practise number bonds to 10 e.g. If there are 5 red ones and 10 in total, how many blue ones must there be? 5+5 makes 10.
