Greek homes
September 23, 2025🏛️ Year 6 Explore Ancient Greek Homes – With Stunning Drawings! 🏛️
This term, Year 6 have been diving into the fascinating world of Ancient Greece—and one of the highlights has been learning all about Greek homes. From materials to layout, and even decoration, we’ve discovered that homes in Ancient Greece were very different from the ones we live in today!
🧱 What Were Greek Homes Made Of?
One of the first things we noticed was how different the materials were. Greek homes were mainly made from:
- Sun-dried mud bricks – These were easy to make and worked well in the hot, dry Greek climate.
- Stone and wood – Used for foundations and support.
- Clay tiles – For the roofs, which were slanted to let rainwater run off.
These materials might sound basic, but they were perfect for keeping houses cool in summer and warm in winter.
🏠 What Made Greek Homes Special?
Greek homes were simple on the outside, but full of smart design inside. Some cool facts:
- Courtyards were at the heart of the home – perfect for cooking, chatting, or relaxing in the fresh air.
- There were often separate areas for men and women, called the andron and gynaikon.
- Most homes had very few windows, which helped keep out heat and dust. Instead, light came in through the open courtyard.
Many homes also had beautiful mosaic floors, and walls painted with scenes from nature or mythology.
