Year 3

Welcome to Year Three!

We have a very creative and lively class with a very supportive team of adults.
In Hazel Class you will find Liz Rice, Chris Marriot and until the end of September, Zofia Knowles.
On Wednesday morning, you will also find Dave Sorrell, who teaches PE and computing.

PE

Hazel Class : Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Please make sure your child has a full PE kit labelled with their name in a PE bag. We do outdoor PE lessons as well so please make sure your child has leggings/track suit bottoms and trainers for the colder months.
Reading
We love to read in Year 3! We encourage the children to read every night. They agree that reading helps them to learn and is fun! We have a reading challenge and the children love to see themselves climbing the reading rainbow every week.

The Stone Age to Iron Age

We start our first term in Year 3 by taking on the role of archaeologists, digging for artefacts to find out about life in pre-history. We excavate coprolites (Stone Age poo!) to find out what they ate. We make cave drawings and cook Iron Age food on an open fire. We discover how life evolved over thousands of years. We take a trip the Ingleborough Caves to learn about different rocks.

Where do we live? and Light

During Where Do We Live? we explore our locality using our mapping skills. We walk to Morecambe and make a collage of the buildings along the front.
The second theme is Light. We learn about sources of light by studying paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. We use our sewing skills to create an embroidery of his famous painting Starry Night. We learn about shadows by creating a shadow puppet play of the Christmas Story.

May the Force Be With You!

We combine Art and Science to explore different forces, including magnetism. We research the spin paintings of British artist Damien Hirst. In DT we learn how to make mechanical toys using levers, pivots and linkages. We take a trip to RSPB Leighton Moss to learn about birds and their habitats.

How Can Living Things Be Healthy?

We are personal trainers, helping our clients to understand how to eat a balanced diet in order to keep fit.
We explore the human skeleton and learn how muscles work. We end the topic by designing and making a healthy pizza in DT. In Art we design and make prints inspired by fruit and vegetables.

    Do they Need Our Help?

We explore the anatomy of plants and learn about pollination and seed dispersal. We plant vegetables in our garden, which we plan to harvest and cook next half term.
We take a walk in the woods to find out about the importance of trees, which we relate to life in the Rainforests.
In DT we use our sewing skills to make a seed bag.
