OUR CURRICULUM

What is unique about our curriculum?

Our curriculum is rooted in the area of the world that our children live in, directly drawing on the opportunities, partnerships and experiences that our locality has to offer. We use this for place-based learning and to provide our pupils with aspirational opportunities using real life skills.

It is designed to accelerate progress to overcome disadvantage across all subjects, but with a necessary focus on English and Mathematics. We strive to deeply embed learning in all aspects of life at Ryelands, constantly building on prior knowledge and helping the children to develop their skills base to the point where they are able to visualise a bright and inspiring future for themselves.

We provide our children with a creative and values rich environment, with a clear commitment to celebrating what is unique about each and every individual within our school; we fully understand that it is essential for us to provide a safe and secure environment for them to explore and develop themselves as people and the resilience that they need to succeed.

We are constantly developing a curriculum that we believe will help our children to become changemakers, innovators and responsible citizens for a sustainable world. Our ability to succeed in learning is driven by three main components: at Ryelands, we are always responsible, respectful to others and ready to learn.

Curriculum Organisation

At Ryelands, our curriculum is based around the statutory requirements in the programmes of study set out in the National Curriculum. For each subject, the statutory requirements have been sequenced into progression documents where key knowledge and skills that each year group should acquire are explicit. These progression documents are used by teachers for planning and assessing a sequence of learning.

The content for each year group is organised into curriculum overviews, which outline the content from every subject that will be taught each half term through an overarching theme. The majority of curriculum content will be taught through the theme with one subject as the main content focus. In Years 1 -6, the six half terms are organised so the main subject content will be: two history, two science and two geography. The remaining subjects will then be evenly spaced throughout the topics in order to ensure full coverage, with additional science being taught each half term.

Some subjects are taught discretely using progressively sequenced schemes: computing, music, languages (French) and PSHE. For English, RE and PE we use Lancashire schemes and progression documents in main and for mathematics we follow the NCETM curriculum prioritisation. Each year, specialised weeks or days are planned to focus on specific subjects, e.g. art week. These change each year depending on the school focus.

The website should give you a flavour of what we have to offer, however please do contact us at school if you require any further information.
