Nursery children meeting Shelby, the tortoise.
October 5, 2026Meeting Shelby the Tortoise 🐢
We are very lucky to have a pet tortoise at our school called Shelby. Each class takes a turn to look after Shelby, and this week it was our turn!
Today, Shelby joined us in class. The children were fascinated as they watched Shelby slowly crawl around the floor. They showed great curiosity and interest, observing his movements and talking about what they could see.
The children were then given the opportunity to gently stroke Shelby if they wished. They were excited to feel how hard and strong his shell was. Some children confidently explored through touch, while others preferred to watch from a little further away.
Over the coming week, we will learn more about Shelby, including what he eats and drinks, where he lives and how we can take good care of him. This will provide the children with opportunities to develop their understanding of living things and learn about how we can show care and responsibility towards animals.
